A Mortgage Less than Rent

Welcome home Austin, Sue Ellen, and Connor!

Austin, an Operator II for the City of Tulsa, and his partner Sue Ellen say several factors were pushing them toward improving their living situation. Rent was too high, space was too tight, and with their one-year-old son Connor to raise, they needed a change but weren’t sure how to get there.

After hearing about Green Country Habitat from friends, coworkers, and billboards, Austin and Sue Ellen found the solution they were looking for and applied for the Homebuyer Program. They didn't know much about the homebuying process going in but were glad to have Habitat walk them through every step — insurance, mortgage, and all.

The biggest surprise? Thanks to forgivable down payment assistance and a low-interest loan through the Homebuyer Program, their new mortgage payment came out less than what they were paying at their old place.

"I was paying way too much for a house that's not in that good a condition," Austin said. "Comparing that to here, there's a lot more benefits. It's a lot better than where we were."

As for their favorite parts of the new home? Sue Ellen picked the kitchen, what she calls, "the heart of the home". Austin’s favorite feature, “two bathrooms.”

We’re Counting Down the Days to

Clark Howard’s Blitz Build

On September 26, more than 200 volunteers and sponsor groups will raise the walls on 10 homes at our annual Clark Howard's Blitz Build. This year’s event will feature three milestone achievements for Green Country Habitat for Humanity.

1. 1. Our biggest ever Clark Howard’s Blitz Build: Wall raising for 10 homes in one day.
   2. The start of our 250^th North Tulsa Initiative Home: the final stretch of our 5-year plan to build 250 homes in North Tulsa.
   3. Our first standalone two-story home: a first for our construction team and a new homestyle for our buyers

Additionally, the 10 homes raised at Blitz Build will kick off the Wilshire Trails neighborhood, a 31-home development near 33^rd St. North and Peoria conveniently located across from Hawthorne Park and Elementary, as well as the Osage Prairie Trail.

Green Country Habitat for Humanity, Greenwood Rising, and Bank of America invites you to attend two upcoming sessions for the 2026 Housing Readiness and Wealth Pathway Series. This free series, open to anyone considering homeownership, kicked off Monday, August 31, with a discussion about Homeowner Readiness.

The two remaining sessions will be held at Greenwood Rising (23 North Greenwood Avenue) from 6:30—7:30 PM:

• • Monday, September 14: Credit and Financial Readiness – Budgeting, credit impact, and personalized financial action plans.
  • Monday, September 28: Generational Wealth Through Homeownership – Assistance resources, wealth transfer, and community wealth creation.

Volunteer with Green Country Habitat 

Are you or do you know a student who needs volunteer hours? Many local schools and universities require students to complete 40 volunteer hours each semester. You can easily get those volunteer hours with Green Country Habitat for Humanity. Whether it’s helping with our upcoming Blitz Build, working at one of our four ReStores, or even making a blood donation, you can give back with purpose.
